The 1970s

The Top Music Genres

PROGRESSIVE ROCK

Progressive Rock is a broad genre of Rock that developed throughout the mid to late 1960s and flourished in the 1970s, as an outgrowth of psychedelic bands who abandoned standard pop traditions in favour of instrumentation and compositional techniques more frequently associated with jazz or classical music.

GLAM ROCK

Glam Rock developed in the UK in the early 1970s and was performed by musicians who wore outrageous costumes, makeup and hairstyles. Glam artists drew on diverse sources across music and pop culture. Their flamboyant and often androgynous visual style challenged pre-existing traditional gender roles.

KRAUTROCK

Krautrock is a broad genre of experimental rock that developed in Germany in the late 1960s and 1970s  and contributed to the evolution of electronic music. The term was originated as a humorous name for a diverse range of bands whose music drew on sources such as psychedelic rock, the avant-garde and funk.

ART ROCK

Art Rock developed right after the 1960s Psychedelic Rock explosion and it has been the result of musicians developing an interest towards a handful of forms of music out of the boundaries of Rock and, in general terms, making an attempt to break away as much as possible from the constrains imposed by Rock & Roll.

HARD ROCK

Hard Rock is a loosely defined subgenre of Rock that began in the mid-1960s and developed into a major form of popular music in the 1970s. It is typified by a heavy use of aggressive vocals, distorted electric guitars, bass guitar, drums, and is often accompanied with keyboards.

PUNK ROCK

Punk Rock (or Punk) is a genre that developed in the mid-1970s in the U.S., UK and Australia. Rooted in 60s Garage Rock and other forms of what is now known as "proto-punk", it rejected perceived excesses of mainstream Rock, producing fast-paced songs, with hard-edged melodies and political lyrics.
